In August, representatives of the University of Virginia and Virginia Tech came together to celebrate the opening of a new facility in Newport News, operated jointly by both universities. As part of the competitive process for landing the center, the Newport News EDA provided financial assistance for the build-out of the space, in conjunction with build-out funding offered by the developer. Both institutions plan on using the space for a variety of classes, workshops, business and community outreach events and meetings, and plan on using the Newport News location to better meet the needs of residents on the Peninsula. Teleconferencing capabilities will allow individuals to participate in classes and workshops with others from across the state or around the world.

Having access to ongoing development and educational opportunities for their employees is key for many Newport News businesses. The new University of Virginia and Virginia Tech Center will serve to build upon an already strong employee development foundation in Newport News, and work with the existing programs provided by local colleges and universities to enhance the local employee base.
